India and Pakistan will renew one of hockey’s most celebrated rivalries on Wednesday as they face each other in a crucial Pool D clash at the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
The match at the sold-out 10,000-capacity Wagener Stadium carries huge significance for both sides. India need at least a draw to secure their place in the next round, while Pakistan must win to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
The rivalry has lost none of its intensity despite the contrasting fortunes of the two teams in recent years.
India vs Pakistan hockey head-to-head record
India and Pakistan have faced each other 183 times across competitions, with Pakistan holding the advantage in the overall record.
Pakistan have won 82 matches, while India have recorded 69 victories. Another 32 encounters have ended in draws.
The numbers, however, tell a different story when recent meetings are considered.
India won 19 of their 35 encounters against Pakistan during the 2010s. The dominance has become even stronger since 2020, with India unbeaten in their last eight meetings against Pakistan, winning seven and drawing one.
Pakistan’s last victory over India came in the 2016 Champions Trophy.
India vs Pakistan in Hockey World Cup
The two teams have met five times at the Hockey World Cup, with India winning three encounters and Pakistan two.
Their World Cup history includes several memorable matches, including Pakistan’s 2-1 victory in the 1971 final and India’s 2-1 triumph in the 1975 final.
Their most recent World Cup meeting came in 2010 in New Delhi, when India produced a dominant 4-1 victory.
The 2026 encounter will be the first World Cup meeting between the neighbours in 16 years.
Pakistan missed the 2014 and 2023 editions after failing to qualify, while India and Pakistan did not meet at the 2018 tournament.
How the rivalry changed
Pakistan enjoyed considerable dominance over India during several decades of hockey history.
In the 1970s, Pakistan won nine of their 13 meetings against India. They continued to hold the upper hand during the 1980s and 1990s, while also enjoying a strong record in the 2000s.
India’s biggest World Cup moment against Pakistan came in 1975, when they defeated their neighbours 2-1 in the final to win their only men’s Hockey World Cup title.
Pakistan, meanwhile, have won a record four men’s World Cup titles and claimed three Olympic gold medals.
India have won Olympic gold eight times, making both nations former giants of international hockey.
India vs Pakistan: Recent form
India opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales, with captain Harmanpreet Singh scoring twice.
They subsequently suffered a 1-4 defeat against England, leaving them with three points from two matches.
Pakistan also lost 1-4 to England before being held to a 3-3 draw by Wales. They therefore enter the final Pool D game with one point.
England have already secured their place in the next round after winning both of their matches.
That makes Wednesday’s contest particularly important. India can progress with a draw, whereas Pakistan need three points to stay alive.
India have dominated the rivalry in recent years
India’s recent record gives them a clear statistical advantage.
The two teams met twice in the European leg of the Pro League earlier this year, with India winning both games — 7-1 and 4-3.
India have also remained unbeaten against Pakistan since 2020.
Yet Pakistan’s desperate need for a victory could make the latest encounter unpredictable. With progression at stake, the historical rivalry is likely to add another intense chapter at Wagener Stadium.
A rivalry bigger than the numbers
The India-Pakistan hockey rivalry dates back to the 1956 Olympics, when India defeated Pakistan 1-0.
Since then, the two nations have produced some of the most memorable matches in international hockey. Although both teams have experienced periods of decline after dominating the sport, the significance of their meetings has remained intact.
Wednesday’s World Cup clash offers another reminder of that enduring rivalry.
India enter the contest as the recent favourites and need only a point. Pakistan, however, have everything to play for.
For both teams, the result could determine whether their 2026 World Cup journey continues — making this far more than just another chapter in a historic rivalry.
