Swiatek US Open loss

Former US Open champion Iga Swiatek lost her cool after a stunning fourth‑round defeat to Chinese qualifier Qinwen Zheng.

Swiatek had raced to a 5‑0 lead in the opening set at Arthur Ashe Stadium but suffered an extraordinary collapse, eventually losing 5‑7, 3‑6.

The frustration carried into the press room, where Swiatek snapped at a journalist who asked how she would process surrendering such a commanding lead. “You can lose a set from any score; nothing special about that. Just that’s what happened, and that’s it,” she said, visibly agitated.

On court, Zheng saved three set points before winning seven straight games to steal the first set. It was her second consecutive comeback from 0‑5 down, having pulled off a similar escape against Madison Keys in the previous round.

Swiatek, who took a medical timeout for her left thigh, could not halt Zheng’s momentum. The Olympic champion broke in the seventh game of the second set and converted her fourth match point to seal one of the biggest wins of her career.

For Zheng, the victory marks another chapter in her remarkable resurgence after elbow surgery last year. She now faces world number two Elena Rybakina, who eliminated Naomi Osaka, for a place in the semi‑finals.

Swiatek, meanwhile, was left to rue a night defined by a dramatic reversal of fortune and her fiery post‑match exchange.
