Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, have raised fresh concerns over their father’s health and conditions in prison, alleging that his situation has worsened significantly during his nearly three years in custody.
In an interview with former England captain and Sky Sports commentator Michael Atherton, the brothers claimed that Imran is being kept in prolonged isolation and has not received adequate medical treatment.
Kasim alleged that Imran has lost around 80 per cent of the vision in one eye and was recently seen wearing an eye patch. He also claimed that the former Pakistan captain spends more than 23 hours a day alone in a small cell with limited access to books and basic comforts.
The brothers’ allegations have not been independently verified.
Imran Khan allegedly spending 23 hours in isolation
Kasim described the prison conditions as increasingly worrying and alleged that Imran has been almost completely isolated.
He said his father had recently told relatives that conditions had deteriorated and had drawn comparisons with other political prisoners who died in custody.
Sulaiman also expressed concern about the change in his father’s appearance and demeanour, saying the family was particularly worried about his medical condition.
The brothers said obtaining access to Imran has also been difficult.
Sons claim visas were blocked
Sulaiman and Kasim said their visas to Pakistan had been blocked on what they were told were technical grounds.
Despite concerns that they could potentially face arrest, the brothers said they were prepared to take the risk of travelling to Pakistan to see their father.
Sulaiman also questioned the handling of Imran’s recent medical examination. He alleged that Imran was taken to a government medical facility for a brief check-up but was then returned to prison instead of being transferred to an independent hospital where doctors and a relative were waiting.
According to Sulaiman, the family remains concerned that Imran is not receiving the medical attention they believe he requires.
Michael Atherton interview triggers PCB controversy
The interview also sparked a controversy involving the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which reportedly complained to Sky Sports over the broadcast.
Reports suggested the PCB considered asking Pakistan’s players not to return to the field after lunch if the interview was aired during the Test at Lord’s. The players ultimately resumed the match.
The episode has brought renewed attention to the intersection of Imran’s political career and his enormous standing in Pakistan cricket.
