Shubman Gill produced a knock for the ages in Guwahati on Wednesday, becoming the fastest batter in ODI history to reach 200 runs as India hunted down West Indies’ record total of 405 for 7.
The India captain reached the landmark in 117 balls, beating Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022. It was Gill’s second ODI double century after his 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023.
By the 41.2 over, he was unbeaten on 215 off 126 balls, with 24 fours and seven sixes, while India sat at 371 for 2 and needed 18 more from 50 deliveries.
West Indies had earlier made history of their own. Sent in after Gill won the toss, they piled up their first 400-plus ODI total, powered by centuries from John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114) — the first time three West Indies batters had scored hundreds in the same ODI innings. Kuldeep Yadav still found a personal milestone in the wreckage, completing 200 ODI wickets.
India’s reply was immediate. Rohit Sharma and Gill put on 255 for the first wicket. Rohit made 101 off 75 before falling lbw to Jayden Seales. Gill, after letting Rohit take the early initiative, accelerated sharply: his hundred came off just 62 balls, the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain, eclipsing Rohit’s 63-ball mark against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup. Virat Kohli added a brisk 29 before Gill continued the assault with Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The innings also marked Gill’s 11th ODI hundred and his second in as many matches after 110 in the series opener. He is now the fastest Indian to 11 ODI centuries and the third-fastest in the world behind Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock. Only Rohit Sharma, with three, has more ODI double hundreds among Indians.
In a chase built for records, the 27-year-old captain delivered one.
