In a strategic shift following weeks of skepticism, the Congress party has initiated outreach to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) through senior advocate and civil activist Prashant Bhushan.
The development signals an effort by the opposition to unite civil society groups, student federations, and grassroots movements behind its ongoing campaign against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over electoral roll revisions.
A Shift From ‘AAP Proxy’ Criticism
The outreach marks a notable departure from Congress’s earlier stance. Party leaders had previously dismissed the youth-led CJP as an unrecognised activist outfit and a “proxy” for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
However, as anti-CEC demonstrations pick up momentum in the national capital, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has increasingly sought to merge student agitations, civil society movements, and opposition marches into a single narrative.
”All protests are one protest. There are no parallel protests. We don’t care who you are… Students, youth, journalists, and the INDIA bloc are under different banners, but it is one cause,” Gandhi stated, emphasizing unified civil resistance.
Prashant Bhushan as Intermediary
Sources indicate that Prashant Bhushan acted as a bridge, inviting CJP leadership—including founder Abhijeet Dipke—to a high-level meeting of INDIA bloc leaders hosted at Rahul Gandhi’s residence.
While CJP representatives ultimately opted not to attend the gathering, the formal invitation reflects a deliberate effort to broaden the opposition coalition. Unlike Congress’s initial hesitation, other alliance partners like the Trinamool Congress (TMC), AAP, and the Left bloc have maintained continuous communication and offered legal coordination to CJP activists.
Backing Detained CJP Leaders
The reconciliation effort gained urgency following the 5-day judicial custody imposed on CJP figures Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka over an alleged security breach and flag-waving demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
Directly addressing their detention, Gandhi condemned the administrative action as an “act of cowardice,” asserting that peacefully waving the national flag is a constitutional right and reiterating that the opposition will collectively reclaim public protest grounds across Delhi.
