Mumbai Police have directed actor Imran Khan to leave India by Oct 28 following his participation in a contentious protest at August Kranti Maidan.
The demonstration, which called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, led to Khan’s brief detention.
Action was initiated under the Immigration Act after former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya flagged that Khan—a US citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card—had illegally engaged in local political agitations.
During the demonstration, Khan maintained he had no affiliation with any organisation or specific demands. “I am here as a citizen… to see why freedom of movement is being restricted,” he stated before being escorted into a police van.
The notice highlights stringent regulations barring foreign nationals and OCI cardholders from participating in domestic political protests in India.
With the Oct 28 deadline looming, the high-profile case has sparked a wider debate regarding civil liberties and the legal boundaries governing foreign citizens residing in the country.
