Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested in connection with the alleged hurried cremation of the junior doctor raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
Ghosh, who represented Panihati, was taken into custody from Odisha. He has been named in a fresh FIR at Khardah police station along with Panihati councillor Somnath Dey and local resident Sanjeev Mukherjee, following a complaint by the victim’s father.
The complaint alleges the cremation was carried out in undue haste under the supervision of the accused, bypassing family consent and documentation, and overtaking other bodies in queue — allegedly to prevent a second autopsy and conceal evidence.
Police sources said Ghosh faces charges including destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case is being investigated by the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, separate from the ongoing CBI probe into the rape and murder.
The development follows directions from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who on August 8 instructed police to register a fresh case during a memorial marking the second anniversary of the doctor’s death.
The 31‑year‑old postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar room at RG Kar on August 9, 2024, sparking nationwide protests demanding justice and improved safety for doctors.
