The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the low‑pressure area over coastal West Bengal has intensified into a depression, now lying close to the Odisha coast.

According to the IMD bulletin issued at 8:30 AM IST, the system is centered near 22.3° N latitude and 88.6° E longitude, close to northwest of Canning (West Bengal) — about 40 km southeast of Kolkata, 130 km east of Medinipur, 190 km east‑northeast of Baripada (Odisha), and 260 km east‑southeast of Jamshedpur (Jharkhand).

The depression is expected to move northwestward across West Bengal toward Jharkhand within 24 hours, bringing enhanced rainfall activity over north Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, accompanied by gusty winds.

The IMD has advised fishermen and district administrations to remain alert and avoid venturing into the north Bay of Bengal until conditions improve.
