A shocking incident unfolded in Jhandraguda village under Temurupalli Gram Panchayat of Mathili block, Malkangiri district, where villagers allegedly killed an elderly woman, Sukra Kawasi, suspecting her of practicing witchcraft.
Her son, Mangudu Kawasi, lodged a complaint at Mathili police station after she went missing. Police launched an investigation and uncovered that the accused had murdered Sukra nearly twenty days earlier and buried her body in a village pond. Officers recovered the decomposed body and sent it to Koraput for post-mortem examination.
Investigators identified three accused — Piede Madkami, Unga Kawasi, and Rama Kawasi — as responsible for the crime. Police arrested them and produced them in court. The investigation continues to determine further involvement and motives behind the killing.
Mathili IIC Dipanjali Pradhan, SI Manaranjan Pradhan, and SI Sadashiv Pujari led the probe. Their swift action helped crack the case and bring the accused to justice within a short span.
