Novak Djokovic continues to etch his name deeper into tennis history, defeating Roman Safiullin in four sets (7-6(6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3) to secure his 17th Wimbledon quarter-final and a record-breaking 66th Grand Slam quarter-final overall.
With this triumph, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer’s tally of 105 Wimbledon wins, becoming the most successful men’s singles player at the Championships.
The match was far from straightforward. Safiullin, a 2023 Wimbledon quarter-finalist returning from a hip injury, pushed Djokovic with aggressive rallies and capitalized on windy conditions. Djokovic admitted he struggled to find rhythm early, describing his first week as “survive to thrive.” Yet, his precise serving and composure in critical moments proved decisive.
Djokovic edged the opening set in a tense tiebreak, then tightened his grip in the second. Safiullin fought back in the third, breaking Djokovic’s serve and exploiting lapses in concentration. But the Serbian champion reasserted control in the fourth, closing out the contest with trademark authority.
This victory not only highlights Djokovic’s resilience but also underscores his relentless pursuit of milestones. His record-breaking 106th Wimbledon win places him second only to Martina Navratilova’s 120 overall victories at the All England Club.
As Djokovic marches into the quarter-finals, the question remains: how many more records can he rewrite before his Wimbledon journey concludes?
