With the southwest monsoon gaining strength, the Kataka District Administration has swung into action to protect residents from predicted heavy rainfall.

The Collector & District Magistrate has issued a comprehensive emergency order closing all educational institutions and imposing multiple restrictions for tomorrow.

Citing an “Orange Warning” from the India Meteorological Department’s Bhubaneswar centre, the order warns of heavy to very heavy rain, potential localised flooding, waterlogging, and rising water levels in the Mahanadi river system.

Key measures announced:

  • All government, aided, and private schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres across Kataka district will remain closed on Monday, July 6.
  • Major public and private construction works stand suspended for the day (exceptions only for critical flood management and emergency relief).
  • Swimming, bathing, and all recreational or commercial activities in the Mahanadi river and its distributaries are strictly prohibited.
  • Police will intensify patrolling at river ghats to prevent public access.
  • Sand extraction from all sources in the district has been stopped until further notice.

The order, issued under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act 2005, directs the Kataka Municipal Corporation Commissioner and all Block Development Officers to widely publicise the restrictions and deploy nodal officers for round-the-clock monitoring.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant, avoid low-lying and riverine areas, and follow safety guidelines. This preemptive step aims to minimise risks during what could be one of the stronger spells of the 2026 monsoon season in the region.

Parents and educational institutions have been advised to make necessary arrangements for students, while construction workers should confirm the suspension with their respective sites. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and will issue updates as needed.
