An untimely Rath Yatra organised by ISKCON in Houston, USA, has triggered a fresh row among devotees over alleged violations of Jagannath traditions.
The event, held earlier this month, drew criticism for depicting Lord Jagannath with palms and fingers — a portrayal considered inconsistent with scriptural norms.
Devotees expressed outrage, stating that the deity’s traditional form does not include fully shaped hands. The depiction, they said, hurt religious sentiments and misrepresented the sanctity of the festival.
Despite repeated objections, ISKCON has continued to organise Rath Yatras abroad outside the prescribed schedule. Critics argue that such events distort the spiritual and cultural essence of the Jagannath tradition, revered by millions of Odias worldwide.
No official response has been issued by ISKCON regarding the controversy.
Earlier, Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb had warned that legal action would be taken if untimely Rath Yatras persisted. He confirmed writing to the Prime Minister to highlight the issue. For 2026, ISKCON has reportedly planned Rath Yatras at 80 locations and Snana Yatras at 10 sites globally, raising further concerns among devotees.
