Deogarh Woman Sells Newborn Baby For Rs 7k, Cooks Up False Death Story

Deogarh: A woman allegedly sold her newborn son for Rs 7,000 here and fabricated the story of his death to cover up the incident, Deogarh police said on Monday.

Childline workers, with the help of Kundeigola police, rescued the baby from Sendha area of ​​Reamal block. The newborn’s mother and the other woman to whom he was sold have been arrested, the police said.

According to reports, Basanti Majhi, wife of Ram Majhi, gave birth to a son on the 8th of January. A day after the birth, the local ASHA worker found out that the baby was missing. When she enquired, the Basanti claimed that her baby died.

In the meanwhile, an anonymous caller reported 1089 Childline services and reported that a baby had been sold in the same locality.

Following this, District Child Protection Officer Romeo Mohapatra directed Childline Director Rita Rani Rout, CSDR Director Jagannath Panda and Childline Coordinator Prashant Behera rushed to the spot with Kundeigola Police.

During the investigation, the mother of the newborn, Basanti Majhi, confessed that she has sold her baby for Rs 7,000 to Jhulana Behera of Nuapada village in Reamal block under the mediation of Dilip Dehuri and his wife Sonali Dehuri, who are staying in a rented house in Shenda village.

Immediately, the rescue team reached the village and rescued the baby boy. After consultation with CWC, the baby was handed over to the local care home for children.

Following a complaint by Childline director, Kundeigola police arrested Sonali Dehuri and Jhulana Behera under relevant Sections of the IPC and  Juvenile Justice Act. However, Dilip Dehuri managed to escape arrest and further investigation is on, the police said.
