A dacoity accused was injured in a police encounter after he allegedly hurled a bomb and opened fire at officers while attempting to escape in Ganjam district.
The accused, identified as Kalia alias Ghanashyam Behera of Naitada Sahi under Purushottampur police limits, was wanted in multiple robbery and dacoity cases. Acting on a tip‑off, Inspector‑in‑Charge Kulamani Sethi of Purushottampur police station led a team to apprehend him.
Police chased Kalia, who was riding a motorcycle with an associate, along the forest road between Kinari and Chunchipada under Kodala police station limits. During the chase, Kalia hurled a bomb at the police team and opened fire. In retaliation, Inspector Sethi fired at the accused in what police described as self‑defence.
Kalia sustained a bullet injury to his right leg. He was rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Kodala and later referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advanced treatment.
Authorities confirmed that further investigation into the incident is underway.
