New Delhi: More than two decades after, the Congress party got its president out of Gandhi family with senior leader and Rajya Sabha Member Mallikarjun Kharge emerging victorious in party’s internal election, the result of which is announced today.

Kharge, the leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha who was facing Sashi Tharoor in the presidential poll secured 7,897 votes out of total 9,385. Tharoor managed to bag 1,072 votes.

A long-time loyalist of the Gandhi family, Kharge will be at the helm of party affairs. He emerged victorious amid complaint by Team Tharoor about “irregularities” in the polling process.

The counting, which began at 10 am at the Congress headquarters in Delhi, ended around 1 pm.

Around 96 per cent of the 9,915 eligible leaders had voted in the election held on Monday, the Congress had said.

The party had been headed by a member from Gandhi mostly since Independence, who was elected unanimously.
