A tragic incident has been reported from Gabaguda village under Chacha Panchayat in Jharigam block, Nabarangpur district, where a 15‑year‑old Class 10 student, identified as Girija Meher, allegedly died by suicide late Monday night.
According to sources, Girija, daughter of Sundar Singh Meher and Ambika Meher, was studying at Chacha Government High School. She had been unwell for several days and was absent from school. On Monday, she accompanied her family to their paddy field and returned home in the evening. After cooking dinner and serving her family, she told them she would study for her upcoming exam and later went to bed.
Early Tuesday morning, her mother discovered Girija hanging from a mango tree about ten metres from their house, using a scarf. The family immediately informed the Jharigam police, who reached the spot under the direction of IIC Rachita Madkami. ASI Dilip Kumar Barik and his team recovered the body and seized her notebooks for examination.
The body was sent to Jharigam Community Health Centre for post‑mortem. Police have registered an unnatural death case (No. 21/26) and initiated an investigation. After the autopsy, the body will be handed over to the family.
