Madrid: Defending champion Carolina Marin on Tuesday announced that she will not be able to defend her title at the Tokyo Games later this year due to a knee injury.
“After the examination during the weekend and the medical consultation, I confirm that I have torn the ACL and both meniscus on my left knee. I will undergo surgery this week and start my recovery,” Marin tweeted. “This is another blow that I have to deal, but I will certainly be back. The preparation during the last two months had become very difficult for reasons beyond the team’s control, but we were excited and knew that I would be in the best shape for the Olympics. It won’t be possible,” she tweeted.

Marin won the season-opening Thailand Open tournaments with ease and finished as the runner-up at BWF World Tour Finals. Carolina Marin also won the Swiss Open and the European Championships title as recently as May 2.
Tai Tzu Ying, the World No. 1, was the only shuttler who managed to beat Carolina Marin in the ongoing season. In fact, Marin had beaten reining world champion PV SIndhu in straight games in the Swiss Open final.
