Bhubaneswar endured oppressive weather on Saturday as humidity soared and the heat index touched 47°C, intensifying discomfort for residents.
At 5:30 a.m., the city recorded 30.8°C with 87 per cent humidity. The high moisture content pushed the heat index to 43°C. By 8:30 a.m., temperatures rose to 33°C while humidity remained at 77 per cent, driving the heat index further to 47°C.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) advised residents to take precautions against heat stress. Officials urged people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, wear light clothing, and limit outdoor activities during peak hours.
On Friday, Bhubaneswar had already recorded a maximum temperature of 41°C, reflecting the ongoing spell of intense summer heat across Odisha. The IMD forecast indicated that hot and humid conditions will persist until at least June 10, with little relief expected.
The weather department continues to monitor the situation closely and emphasises the importance of following heat-safety guidelines. Residents remain under the grip of sultry conditions as the city braces for more days of extreme humidity.
