Gurugram Police have added an attempt to murder charge against Kalyan Bainsla, who allegedly rammed his car into a woman biker during a road-rage incident on Golf Course Road.
The police added Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to the FIR on Tuesday. The section relates to attempt to murder.
The FIR was initially registered on Monday under Sections 125 and 281 of the BNS, pertaining to acts endangering the life or personal safety of others and rash driving, respectively.
What happened on Golf Course Road?
The incident took place early Sunday when the woman, identified as Sia, was riding her Aprilia sportbike with a group of other riders.
According to Sia, the driver of a white Maruti Ciaz began following her and repeatedly signalled for her to stop after allegedly driving dangerously close to her motorcycle.
“He had started chasing me on the Golf Course Road. I asked him to drive while maintaining distance. He kept making hand gestures, ordering me to stop my bike,” she said in a video posted on social media.
The footage of the incident subsequently went viral.
Police take suo motu cognisance
The incident came to wider public attention after Sia shared a video describing what happened.
Following the circulation of the footage, Gurugram Police took suo motu cognisance of the incident and initiated action.
Bainsla has denied intentionally hitting the bikers.
“I did not hit them intentionally,” the accused said, according to the report.
The addition of Section 109 significantly changes the nature of the case, as the police are now investigating the incident as an alleged attempt to murder in addition to the earlier charges of endangering personal safety and rash driving.
The investigation is underway, and the allegations against Bainsla are yet to be established in court.
