Lucknow: A barber entered the house of a man who lived across the street from his shop and allegedly murdered his two children in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun. The murderer was shot dead in an encounter after he attacked the cops while fleeing, police said on Wednesday.
The double murder sparked tension in the city on Tuesday evening but the situation is under control now, they added.
The accused, who later engaged in a fatal encounter with the police, has been identified as Sajid.
The incident occurred while the two children, aged around 11 and 6, were playing on the rooftop of a building.
According to Bareilly inspector-general of police Rakesh Kumar, the accused, Sajid, approached them and after a brief pause, committed the heinous act. The victims, identified as Ayush and Honey, were siblings.
Rakesh Kumar stated, “The authorities arrived at the scene seeing which the suspect attempted to flee. During the chase, the suspect fired at the authorities and was fatally shot in return. The suspect succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.”
Badaun SSP Alok Priyadarshi provided further details, during an interaction with the press, “The assailant, Sajid, entered the house around 7:30 pm, targeting the children. After the attack, he attempted to escape but was confronted by the crowd. Despite their efforts, he managed to evade capture. However, the police swiftly responded upon learning of his escape. The ensuing encounter led to his demise,” ANI has reported.
Priyadarshi also added that the murder weapon and a revolver have been recovered from the scene. Additionally, the deceased children’s family named the accused’s brother, Javed, in the FIR, and efforts are underway to nab him.
According to IG Rakesh Kumar, the age of the accused falls between 25 and 30 years, with further details pending investigation.
The motive behind the gruesome murders remains unclear, as stated by Badaun district magistrate (DM) Manoj Kumar. However, there are reports suggesting a dispute over money behind the incident.
SSP Priyadarshi mentioned that the accused, reportedly a barber, had allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 from the children’s father. The police are actively probing the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
Following the incident, tension escalated in the locality, prompting heavy police presence at Baba Colony. However, the situation has since been brought under control by law enforcement.
DM Manoj Kumar has urged the community to maintain peace, assuring them of a thorough investigation. He confirmed that the bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.
