Aichi‑Nagoya, Sept 20: India’s women’s table tennis team launched their Asian Games 2026 campaign with a thrilling comeback victory over Singapore, winning 3‑2 in their Group F clash.
India trailed 1‑2 after early defeats, but Sreeja Akula and Yashaswini Ghorpade produced clutch performances to turn the tie around.
Sreeja defeated Zeng Jian 3‑1 in a must‑win match, levelling the score at 2‑2. In the decisive fifth rubber, Yashaswini held her nerve to beat Loy Ming 3‑2, sealing India’s victory.
Earlier, Yashaswini had opened the tie with a 3‑1 win over Jian Zeng, while Sreeja lost narrowly to Loy Ming. Diya Chitale fell to Tan Zhao, leaving India on the brink before the comeback.
India has previously won three bronze medals in Asian Games table tennis. With this victory, the women’s team keeps alive hopes of a historic first‑ever gold medal.
