Police in Angul district reported a tragic incident after a minor girl, rescued in a kidnapping case, died by suicide at the Sakhi Centre on Friday night.
The girl had earlier been abducted by Benupani, a youth from Samakoi village. Her father, Manoj Sahu, filed a kidnapping complaint at Angul Sadar police station on April 1. Police launched an investigation and rescued the girl.
Benupani, who reportedly eloped with the girl and married her, died by suicide, fearing police action and mental harassment of his parents. His death occurred shortly before the girl’s suicide.
Authorities confirmed the girl was kept at the Sakhi Centre under police supervision after her rescue. The incident shocked the community and raised questions about the handling of sensitive cases involving minors.
Police sources said both the youth and the girl were in a relationship and had married before the complaint. Investigators are now examining the circumstances that led to two suicides within days of each other.
