An American filmmaker travelling through India had an unexpected hospital experience in Odisha after falling seriously ill from overeating local food. What shocked him even more than the illness was the bill he received after treatment: nothing.

Mike Noone, who had been travelling in India for around five days, reportedly suffered severe vomiting after eating an excessive amount of local cuisine. He said he was vomiting roughly every 15 minutes for nearly 12 hours before seeking medical help.

Noone later clarified that his condition was not caused by food poisoning. Instead, he admitted that he had simply eaten far more than he should have because he enjoyed the food.

IV drip, medicines and injections

After his condition worsened, the filmmaker visited a rural government hospital in Odisha. Medical staff treated him with intravenous fluids, anti-nausea medication and two injections.

Given the treatment he had received, Noone apparently expected to receive a significant hospital bill.

Instead, he was discharged without being charged anything.

The experience left the American filmmaker surprised, prompting him to highlight the difference between healthcare costs in India and the United States.

‘Would have cost thousands’ in the US

Noone suggested that a comparable emergency visit in the US involving an IV drip, medication and injections could potentially cost thousands of dollars.

His account subsequently gained attention online, with social media users discussing the affordability of treatment at India’s government hospitals and comparing healthcare expenses in India and the US.

The incident has also sparked conversations about the role of India’s public healthcare system, particularly the availability of government-funded treatment in rural areas.

However, Noone’s experience represents his individual case at a particular government facility. Healthcare charges can vary depending on the hospital, location, treatment and patient’s circumstances, so his experience should not be interpreted as evidence that all medical treatment in India is universally free.

For Noone, though, the experience offered an unexpected takeaway from his India trip: after becoming ill from eating too much local food, he walked out of a rural Odisha government hospital without having to pay a hospital bill.
