Panic and public outrage gripped the Capital Hospital area in Unit-6 after customers discovered worms crawling in a popular street-side dahibara.

Several customers who had already consumed parts of the snack noticed the contamination mid-meal, prompting them to throw away the food in disgust and immediately alert the local police.

While police personnel rushed to the scene and reportedly destroyed the contaminated food, critics have questioned why the vendor was let off with a mere warning instead of facing stricter punitive action.

The incident has opened a Pandora’s box regarding food safety standards around critical healthcare zones. Capital Hospital sees thousands of vulnerable patients, elderly citizens, and anxious family members arriving daily from across Odisha. Selling unhygienic and unsafe food right outside its gates poses an immediate and grave health hazard to the public. When confronted, the vendor bizarrely claimed he was away taking a bath and shifted blame to his family members—an excuse that failed to appease angry locals.

This unsettling discovery has brought the effectiveness of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) enforcement drives into question. While authorities routinely raid hotels and upscale restaurants over adulteration and quality control, roadside vendors who serve massive volumes of street delicacies like dahibara and bara-ghuguni frequently bypass rigorous inspections.

Citizens and local stakeholders have raised serious questions and put forward urgent demands:

  • Regular Monitoring: Strict, routine enforcement and monitoring of food stalls in and around hospital zones.

  • Mandatory Licensing: Strict checks on street vendors requiring proper licensing, training, and adherence to hygiene standards.

  • Transparent Action: Clear public statements and accountability frameworks from Food Safety Officers and local police stations.

  • Zero Tolerance: Heavy penalties for first-time violations and permanent closure for repeat offenders.
