The Ministry of Power has approved the export of up to 654 MW of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority to help the Himalayan nation meet its power needs after devastating floods damaged its hydropower infrastructure.

The approval, effective from 13 September to 31 December 2026, permits supply for 18 hours a day from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours. A maximum of 600 MW can be exported through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line, while up to 54 MW will flow through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line. The volume of power to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026.

Flash floods on 26 August, triggered by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, swept away or damaged more than a dozen hydropower plants and cut off over 400 MW of generation capacity — nearly 10 percent of Nepal’s operational power. The disaster claimed more than 1,300 lives and left thousands missing, while also reversing Nepal’s recent status as a net electricity exporter. Hydropower supplies almost all of Nepal’s electricity.

The Ministry of Power said the timely approval will help Nepal meet its electricity requirements during this difficult period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal. India remains committed to supporting Nepal and deepening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

The existing cross-border transmission links will enable immediate supply, underscoring New Delhi’s role as a reliable partner.
