The devastating floods and mudslides in Nepal continue to wreak havoc, with three more Odias reported missing, raising the total number of missing persons from Odisha to five.
According to reports, Gunnam Jayakrishna, his wife Gunnam Sai Bindu Kumari, and their two‑year‑old daughter from Jampali village in Baragada district have gone missing. Jayakrishna was employed at a hydro project in Nepal and had been living with his family near the flood‑hit Bhote Koshi river region.
Earlier, Khordha natives Sandeep Mohapatra and his wife Siddharthi Kumari Sahu, who had been residing in Australia since 2018, were also reported missing after travelling to Nepal on August 22. Their last contact was on August 25 near the Tibet border, after which their phones went silent.
Meanwhile, Mayurbhanj’s Kulsum Nigar (20), initially reported missing while trekking in Pokhara, has been traced safe in Dhorpatan with her group.
The Odisha government has set up a 24×7 control room at Odisha Bhawan in New Delhi, with nodal officer Pritish Panda coordinating with families and the Indian Embassy. Officials confirmed that efforts are underway to trace the missing Odias, while other groups from Odisha, including a football team in Pokhara and travellers from Puri, have been reported safe.
Nepal’s death toll has crossed 390, with over a thousand people still missing. Rescue and search operations remain ongoing amid widespread destruction of homes, markets, hydro projects, and infrastructure.
