The Indian women’s hockey team is poised for a historic finish at the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026, as they prepare to take on Germany in the 5th‑6th classification match on Thursday.
It marks India’s best World Cup campaign since their fourth‑place finish at the inaugural edition in 1974.
In their ninth World Cup appearance, India have displayed remarkable grit — holding higher‑ranked teams like China, England, and Australia to draws and registering their most dominant win in tournament history with a 6‑1 victory over South Africa. Their only loss came against defending champions Netherlands, who were pushed hard for a 2‑0 result.
Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne praised the team’s progress: “The girls realise they’ve taken big steps. They’re disappointed, and that’s good — it means they believe they can do more.”
India’s defence, led by captain Salima Tete and goalkeepers Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam, has been rock‑solid, while forwards Deepika and Navneet Kaur will look to convert chances and penalty corners against Germany.
