The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a re-test for three subjects of the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) June 2026 session — English, Commerce, and Sociology — following widespread concerns over errors in the question papers.

The decision comes after candidates raised objections regarding factual inaccuracies, typographical mistakes, and translation flaws that compromised the integrity of the examination.

UGC-NET, a crucial qualifying test for lectureship and research fellowships across India, was conducted in June 2026. Soon after, candidates reported multiple discrepancies in the papers. Responding to the complaints, NTA constituted an expert committee to review the matter. The committee’s findings confirmed that several questions contained errors ranging from misspelled names of scholars and garbled book titles to flawed stems, grammatical mistakes, and non-standard terminology for established concepts.

Such lapses, the committee noted, could unfairly disadvantage candidates and undermine the credibility of the examination process. In light of these findings, NTA decided to reconduct the exams for the affected subjects in September 2026. The agency emphasized that the move was aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency, and accuracy in the evaluation process.

The re-examination announcement has been met with mixed reactions. While many candidates welcomed the decision as a corrective measure, others expressed frustration over the additional stress and preparation required. Education experts have pointed out that the incident highlights the need for stricter quality checks in exam paper setting and translation, especially for national-level competitive tests that determine academic careers.

NTA has assured candidates that the re-test will be conducted with enhanced scrutiny and safeguards to prevent similar issues. The agency also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the credibility of UGC-NET, which serves as a gateway for thousands of aspirants seeking teaching and research opportunities in higher education.

The re-examination is expected to impact a significant number of candidates across the country. With the revised schedule, aspirants now face the challenge of revisiting their preparation strategies while awaiting further details on the exact dates and guidelines. The incident has reignited discussions about the robustness of India’s examination system and the importance of accountability in academic assessments.

As the education sector continues to grapple with increasing competition and high stakes, the NTA’s decision underscores the importance of prioritizing accuracy and fairness.

For candidates, the upcoming September re-test represents both a second chance and a reminder of the challenges inherent in large-scale examinations.
