A low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts early Thursday, triggering forecasts of heavy rainfall across Odisha.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the system developed at 8.30 am IST on July 2 under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that had persisted since Wednesday. The associated circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilts southwestwards with height.
IMD officials said the weather system is likely to become more marked over the next two to three days. Under its influence, several districts of Odisha are expected to receive significant rainfall.
Many regions of the state have already experienced heavy showers in the past 24 hours. The IMD has advised residents to remain alert as rainfall activity intensifies, with potential risks of waterlogging and localised flooding.
