A senior United States Space Force official’s Instagram account was reportedly compromised by suspected Iranian hackers, raising fresh concerns about cyber warfare and online propaganda amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The account belonged to Chief Master Sergeant John Bentivegna, the highest-ranking enlisted member of the US Space Force. According to reports, hackers temporarily gained control of the account and posted pro-Iran content, videos, and anti-US messages before authorities began efforts to regain access.
Pro-Iran Posts Appear on Hacked Account
Several posts shared from the compromised account reportedly praised Iran and criticized US military involvement in the Middle East. Some content referenced historical conflicts, including the Vietnam War, and featured messages aimed at American military personnel.
One video reportedly used audio associated with the late Vietnamese broadcaster known as “Hanoi Hannah,” urging US troops to abandon what it described as a losing mission. The content also included imagery connected to prominent Iranian figures.
The unusual posts quickly attracted attention online before being removed.
Space Force Confirms Security Breach
A spokesperson for the US Space Force confirmed that Bentivegna’s Instagram account had been compromised. However, officials did not provide details regarding how long the unauthorized content remained visible or who was responsible for the cyber intrusion.
In a separate statement posted through official channels, Bentivegna warned colleagues and followers not to interact with any suspicious content or links shared from the affected account.
“We are working with the appropriate teams to regain access and resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” he stated.
Growing Cyber Threats During US-Iran Conflict
The incident comes amid increasing cyber threats linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. American military officials have repeatedly warned personnel that their online accounts, mobile devices, and personal information could be targeted by hostile actors.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) has previously reported receiving intelligence about attempts to exploit commercial location data and digital platforms to monitor military personnel and operations.
Security experts note that cyberattacks targeting public figures, military leaders, and government officials have become a common feature of modern geopolitical conflicts.
Previous Cyber Incidents Raise Concerns
This is not the first cyber-related incident linked to the current US-Iran tensions. Earlier reports indicated that suspected Iranian hackers targeted American military personnel and their families through threatening messages and online intimidation campaigns.
In another high-profile case, hackers reportedly accessed the personal email account of FBI Director Kash Patel and leaked selected information online.
These incidents have intensified concerns about digital security and the growing role of cyber operations in international conflicts.
Social Media Becomes a Battlefield
The latest breach highlights how social media platforms are increasingly being used as tools for information warfare. Both the United States and Iran have relied on digital content, videos, and online messaging campaigns to influence public opinion and shape narratives surrounding the conflict.
Analysts say cyberattacks and propaganda campaigns are likely to remain an important aspect of geopolitical rivalries as nations expand their capabilities in cyberspace.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as another reminder of the challenges governments face in protecting digital assets during periods of heightened international tension.
