The Crime Branch investigating the Balianta mob‑lynching case arrested one more accused from Dhenkanal, taking the total number of arrests to 18.
The accused, Pradeep Mangaraj alias Dipu, hails from Bainupur under Balianta police limits.
Officials said the investigation continues as teams work to identify and apprehend remaining suspects. The DIG confirmed that efforts are underway to trace others involved in the brutal killing of GRP Constable Soumya Ranjan Swain.
The incident occurred on May 7 near Balianta police station on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. Swain, 32, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob after accusations of misconduct toward a woman. The crime sparked statewide outrage and raised questions about law and order. The Crime Branch took over the probe soon after the incident.
Investigators found that locals and outsiders were involved in the attack. Earlier, the DGP had said all key suspects had been identified.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team continued its second‑day investigation, questioning three of Swain’s colleagues over possible links to a senior officer. The team examined claims that the officers worked at a gym and were assigned domestic duties at the ADG’s residence. Officials also issued notices to the Twin City Police Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and Home Department authorities.
The NHRC probe aims to uncover any high‑level connections and ensure accountability in the case.
