Ignacio Buse scripted a fairytale in Hamburg as the 22‑year‑old qualifier stunned sixth seed Tommy Paul to clinch his maiden ATP Tour title.
In a gripping three‑hour final, Buse battled through dizziness and a second‑set setback to prevail 7‑6(6), 4‑6, 6‑3.
The victory marks a watershed moment for Peruvian tennis. Buse joins Pablo Arraya, Jaime Yzaga, and Luis Horna as the only men from his country to lift tour‑level singles trophies. Horna’s 2007 triumph was the last time Peru celebrated such success.
Emotional scenes followed as Buse dedicated the win to his family, especially his father, a tennis coach who was present in Hamburg. “This is for Peru, for my family, and for everyone who believed in me,” he said.
With this breakthrough, Buse will surge 26 places to World No. 31, becoming only the fourth Peruvian to break into the Top 50. He is also the first qualifier to win an ATP Tour title since October 2025, and just the third qualifier ever to capture an ATP 500 crown.
For Peru, the Hamburg victory is more than a sporting milestone—it is a moment of national pride and a signal of a new era in tennis.
