Delhi government fuel-saving measures

The Delhi government unveiled a set of fuel-saving measures in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for responsible consumption.

Officials confirmed that all government employees will work from home for two days each week. The administration also mandated that half of official meetings will be conducted online to reduce travel.

The government announced that Delhi will observe a “Metro Day” to encourage public transport use. Citizens will also be urged to follow a “No Car Day” once every week. Office timings for government departments and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be adjusted to ease traffic congestion and cut fuel consumption during peak hours.

Petrol quotas for officers have been reduced by 20%, lowering the monthly cap from 200 litres. The government further decided not to purchase new vehicles for the next six months. To support employees, 58 special buses will operate across 29 government colonies.

These measures align with the Prime Minister’s seven appeals to citizens, which included reducing fuel use, postponing gold purchases, avoiding foreign travel, and adopting carpooling and work-from-home practices. Government sources clarified that the appeals are not austerity measures but calls for “economic patriotism” amid rising global energy prices and pressure on foreign exchange reserves due to the Iran conflict.

The Delhi government will also launch a campaign to encourage citizens to contribute to fuel conservation and responsible spending.
