India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Warning for multiple districts in Odisha as the state braces for an extended spell of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next seven days. The weather system is expected to intensify gradually, with peak activity forecast between May 4 and May 6.

Gradual Intensification of Weather Activity

The ongoing weather pattern began with scattered thunderstorms under a Yellow Warning on May 3 and is expected to strengthen over the coming days. Initially, isolated thunderstorm activity is likely in parts of South Odisha, North Coastal districts, and areas such as Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, while other regions may experience relatively stable conditions.

Orange Warning for Multiple Districts

From May 4 onwards, the situation is expected to worsen, with the IMD warning of severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, and strong winds reaching 50–60 kmph. Districts likely to be affected include:

  • Mayurbhanj
  • Keonjhar
  • Balasore
  • Bhadrak
  • Ganjam
  • Gajapati
  • Rayagada

The peak phase between May 5 and 6 may bring widespread thunderstorm activity across North Odisha and coastal areas, with additional impact expected in districts such as Kalahandi and Kandhamal.

Potential Damage to Crops and Infrastructure

Authorities have cautioned that strong winds and lightning strikes may cause damage to crops, trees, temporary structures, and power infrastructure. Residents, particularly in vulnerable and rural areas, are advised to remain cautious during this period.

Conditions to Ease After May 6

From May 6 onwards, the intensity of the system is expected to gradually decline. However, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms may continue at isolated locations until May 9, with wind speeds ranging between 30–40 kmph. Yellow Warnings will remain in place during this period.

Classic Pre-Monsoon Nor’wester Pattern

The current weather conditions resemble a typical pre-monsoon Nor’wester pattern, characterised by short-duration but intense afternoon and evening thunderstorms across eastern India.

Safety Advisory Issued

The IMD has urged residents to take precautions, including:

  • Avoiding open fields during lightning
  • Staying indoors during thunderstorms
  • Securing loose objects and temporary structures
  • Following local advisories and emergency updates
