Low-Pressure System Likely Over Bay of Bengal From May 11; Odisha May See Heavy Rain, Storms

A potential low-pressure system is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal during the second week of May, offering possible relief from the ongoing heatwave in Odisha.

According to projections from the Global Forecast System (GFS), the system may develop between May 11 and May 15 in the southeastern part of the Bay and adjoining areas.

Weather experts indicate that the system could gradually intensify into a depression, with a possibility of evolving into a cyclonic storm. However, the India Meteorological Department has not yet issued any official confirmation regarding cyclone formation, suggesting that the situation remains under close observation.

Heavy Rainfall and Storm Activity Likely

If the system strengthens, coastal regions of Odisha could experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Authorities are likely to remain on alert, especially in vulnerable coastal districts, to minimise potential disruptions and ensure public safety.

Weather expert Biswajit Sahu noted that while some global models hint at the development of a cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal around May 12, others suggest a possible formation in the Arabian Sea. However, he added that it is still too early to determine which system, if any, will materialise, as the lead time remains 10–12 days.

Nor’wester Activity to Precede System

Before the potential low-pressure formation, Odisha is expected to witness Nor’wester (pre-monsoon thunderstorm) activity starting May 7. These storms are typically characterised by sudden rainfall, lightning, and strong winds, often causing short-term disruptions.

The India Meteorological Department has already issued advisories urging residents to remain cautious during this period, particularly in areas prone to lightning and strong winds.

Authorities Urge Vigilance

With weather patterns becoming increasingly dynamic, authorities are keeping a close watch on developments over the Bay of Bengal. Disaster management teams and local administrations are expected to stay prepared for any escalation in weather conditions.

While the forecast signals a possible shift from heatwave conditions to stormy weather, officials stress that predictions at this stage are preliminary. Residents are advised to follow official updates and take necessary precautions as Odisha transitions into an active pre-monsoon phase.
