Voting for the 2026 Assembly Elections commenced on Thursday in the key states of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, marking a crucial political moment with significant national implications.

The elections are being closely watched as major parties battle for dominance in regions historically resistant to certain national political forces.

Massive Voter Turnout Expected in West Bengal

In West Bengal, approximately 3.6 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the first phase, covering 152 out of 294 constituencies across 16 districts. Key constituencies include politically significant regions such as Nandigram, Darjeeling, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar.

The state will undergo a two-phase election, with the second phase scheduled for April 29, 2026.

The contest is primarily between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, both aiming to secure a decisive mandate amid ongoing debates over voter list revisions and governance.

Three-Way Contest in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, polling is being conducted in a single phase, with a competitive three-way political battle underway. The main contenders include:

  • Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Secular Progressive Alliance
  • All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in alliance with the BJP
  • Emerging political influence led by actor-turned-politician Vijay

The DMK has focused its campaign on the “Dravidian Model” of governance and welfare initiatives, while opposition parties have emphasized anti-corruption and administrative reforms.

High-Stakes Political Battle

These elections are seen as a critical test for national and regional parties alike, especially in states where political dynamics have historically been distinct from national trends.

In West Bengal, the contest between TMC and BJP reflects a broader ideological and political struggle, while Tamil Nadu’s election underscores evolving regional alliances and emerging leadership.
