Passport fee hike India 2026

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has announced a significant revision in passport fees, marking the first hike in nearly 14 years.

Beginning July 1, 2026, applicants will face higher charges for both normal and Tatkaal services.

Under the new structure, the fee for a fresh or reissued 36‑page passport for individuals aged 18 and above will rise from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500. The Tatkaal service, which ensures expedited processing, will now cost Rs 5,000, up from Rs 3,500.

Officials clarified that the revision was necessary to align with rising administrative costs and to modernise passport services. The last fee adjustment was introduced in 2012, making this the first major change in over a decade.

The government also emphasised that while the passport is a vital travel document, it should not be misconstrued as proof of Indian citizenship. This clarification comes amid growing public reliance on passports for identity verification.

The hike is expected to impact millions of applicants annually, particularly those opting for Tatkaal services. However, authorities assured that the fee revision will help sustain improvements in digital infrastructure, streamline application processes, and enhance security features.

With India witnessing a surge in international travel, the new fee structure reflects the government’s effort to balance affordability with service quality. Citizens planning to apply for or renew passports are advised to prepare for the revised charges starting July.
