Voting for the high-stakes Assembly elections has officially begun across Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry today, April 9, 2026.

Polling started at 7:00 AM and will continue until 6:00 PM, with millions of eligible voters participating in this crucial democratic process.

The elections are seen as a major test for key political alliances and leaders, with tight contests expected in all three regions.

Kerala Election Highlights

In Kerala, over 2.71 crore voters will decide the fate of 883 candidates contesting for 140 Assembly seats. The main contest is between:

  • Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by CPI(M)
  • United Democratic Front (UDF), led by Congress
  • National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by BJP

Prominent leaders including Pinarayi Vijayan and Rajeev Chandrasekhar have already cast their votes.

Assam Election Highlights

In Assam, around 2.5 crore voters are casting ballots across 126 Assembly constituencies, with 722 candidates in the fray.

The BJP-led NDA is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the opposition alliance, led by Congress along with regional parties like Raijor Dal and CPI(M), is putting up a strong challenge.

Early reports indicate long queues at polling stations, reflecting enthusiastic voter participation.

Puducherry Election Overview

In Puducherry, over 10 lakh voters are eligible to vote for the 30-member Legislative Assembly. The results will play a key role in shaping governance in the Union Territory.

Security and Voting Arrangements

The Election Commission of India has ensured smooth conduct of polling by deploying extensive security measures. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been distributed across all polling stations, and polling teams completed mock drills early in the morning.

Special arrangements have also been made to assist senior citizens and differently-abled voters, promoting inclusive participation.

PM Modi’s Appeal to Voters

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to participate actively in the elections. He called on voters in all three regions to come out in large numbers and strengthen democracy through their vote.
