Odisha Pakhala Guinness World Record

The Odisha Tourism Department has achieved a historic global milestone by securing a Guinness World Record for the largest serving of fermented rice (Pakhala), with an impressive total of 1,174 kilograms prepared and presented in a single vessel.

The record-breaking feat was the centrepiece of Pakhala Paraba 2026, a vibrant two-day festival held at Panthanivas in Bhubaneswar to mark World Pakhala Day. Pakhala Bhat — Odisha’s iconic summer staple made by fermenting or soaking cooked rice in water — is celebrated for its refreshing, probiotic qualities that help beat the heat. Traditionally paired with curd, vegetables, spices, and an array of accompaniments (including over 300 side dishes in this event), it reflects the state’s resourceful agrarian roots and no-waste ethos.

This remarkable achievement not only celebrates Odisha’s rich culinary heritage but also brings international recognition to Pakhala, elevating it from a humble household dish to a symbol of cultural pride with worldwide appeal. Organised in collaboration with the Robin Hood Army under a strict zero-wastage policy, the massive serving was later distributed to underprivileged communities, blending tradition, sustainability, and social impact.

By putting Odisha’s indigenous food traditions on the global map, the record is expected to boost food tourism and highlight the state’s unique gastronomic identity. What was once everyday comfort food has now become a worldwide conversation starter.
