Visitors to Nandankanan Zoological Park will soon see new species as part of an animal exchange programme with Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam.
Exchange Programme
Nandankanan will receive ring-tailed lemurs, wild dogs, a sulphur-crested cockatoo, bonnet macaques, and nilgai. In return, Visakhapatnam zoo will get swamp deer, four-horned antelope, Assamese macaque, mouse deer, and gharials.
The Central Zoo Authority approved the exchange, scheduled between March 7 and March 10, 2026. Teams from both zoos are coordinating logistics to ensure safe transit. A Visakhapatnam team has already reached Bhubaneswar to oversee the process.
Conservation Goals
Officials confirmed that the programme will add ring-tailed lemurs as a new species to Nandankanan’s collection. The initiative aims to enhance genetic diversity and strengthen conservation efforts at both institutions.
