Cuttack: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) on Wednesday has issued a circular banning the sale and use of sharp kite strings called ‘manja’ which injure and kill birds as well as people.
“On the occasion of Makar Sankranti on 14.01.2021, it is hereby ordered that there will be complete ban on use of Chinese manjha, glass embossed strings, which are responsible for injuries and deaths of humans and thousands of birds during flying of kites,” an order of the CMC said.
Besides, the CMC has formed three teams for supervision in this regard.
Manjhas are coated with substances like glass and iron and are used for flying kites which increases the possibility of injuries to humans and birds when they come in contact with the string.
Several people have been injured due to the use of such strings in the recent past.
Kite flying is popular in Cuttack and other areas of the state on Makar Sankranti, on January 14.
Kite lovers, particularly children, start flying kites several days prior to the festival.
