A shocking case of discrimination against the girl child surfaced in Cuttack district, where a woman and her husband were allegedly thrashed by family members after she delivered twin daughters.
The incident took place at Pashulunda village under Srikrushnapur panchayat in Mahanga block.
Reports said Parbati Jena, wife of Chandra Sekhar Jena, gave birth to twin daughters about a month ago. Soon after, her in-laws expressed displeasure over the birth of girls and subjected her to mental and physical torture.
Family members, including her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law, allegedly assaulted Parbati following an argument. When her husband tried to intervene, he too was attacked. The young couple was beaten in full public view, and a video of the assault later went viral on social media.
The incident triggered outrage in the locality, with residents condemning the violence and demanding strict action against the perpetrators. Mahanga police registered a case based on a complaint lodged by the victim and launched an investigation.
Authorities confirmed that statements from witnesses are being recorded, and the viral video has been taken into account as evidence.
