A woman and her young son died in a tragic accident on Friday when heavy iron plates slipped from a truck and crushed them near Simulia police station in Balasore district.
The victims belonged to the family of Bijay Soren from Shyamsundarpur village under Nilgiri police limits. The family had travelled to Paradip in search of work and later boarded a goods truck from Chandikhol to return home. Seven members sat in the open rear portion of the vehicle.
The mishap occurred when the truck braked suddenly after hitting a road hump on the National Highway. The abrupt halt caused the stacked iron plates to slide violently towards the back. The plates fell directly on the passengers, fatally injuring the woman and her son.
Locals rushed to the spot and immediately shifted the injured to Simulia Community Health Centre. Doctors declared the woman and her son dead upon arrival. The rest of the family survived but remains shaken by the incident.
