A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, according to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The depression currently lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal and will likely strengthen into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. Moreover, IMD forecasts that the system will move northwestwards.

Under its influence, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Authorities have already issued red alerts in several districts, and local administrations have instructed residents to remain vigilant. In addition, parts of Sri Lanka’s coast may also experience its impact.

IMD clarified that Odisha will not face any immediate direct impact from this system. Furthermore, weather expert Sarat Sahu explained that since the depression is primarily moving towards southern India, the chances of a significant effect on Odisha remain low.

However, by January 10, coastal and northern Odisha may witness light to moderate rainfall. Foggy conditions will also likely affect interior Odisha.

IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the southern Bay of Bengal because of rough seas, strong winds, and high waves. Consequently, sea travel could become hazardous.

The Odisha government continues to monitor updates from IMD and will issue necessary advisories if required. Additionally, IMD is tracking the system closely and releasing regular bulletins. Citizens have been urged to follow official updates through IMD’s website and mobile app.
