Water purifier types and price in India

Water purifiers in Indian markets are categorized based on their purification technology. So, before listing the actual products and the corresponding water purifier price, let us look at the purification technologies used by them.

RO (Reverse Osmosis)

RO-based water purifiers work on the principle of reverse osmosis. While osmosis is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which the solvent moves through a semi-permeable membrane from a solution of a lower concentration to a solution of a higher concentration, with the application of pressure on the membrane, the gradient is reversed, resulting in reverse osmosis.

In reverse osmosis, the solvent moves from a solution of higher concentration to a solution of lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. The simple but effective reversal has been applied widely in manufacturing RO water purifiers in the industry.

In the context of water purifiers, the solvent (water) moves from a solution with a higher concentration (contaminated water) to a solution of lower concentration (purified water). The semi-permeable membrane is made of fine pores whose diameter is in the order of microns and effectively filters out the TDS (total dissolved solids) present in the water feed.

Reverse osmosis eliminates around 95% of TDS resulting in sweet-tasting and odor-free water. However, the machine cannot tell the good minerals from the contaminants, so the minerals like Magnesium, Copper, Calcium, etc. are also filtered out. That is why, when you opt for a RO water purifier, you need to check if the unit comes with a TDS modulator that prevents a total distillation effect. Alternatively, it can come fitted with a mineralizer cartridge that can infuse fresh ions into the water.

As reverse osmosis makes use of a lot of water during every stage, it results in water wastage. However, the RO purifier releases the reject stream through a different pipe. The output of this pipe cannot be used for consumption but it can definitely be repurposed for gardening, washing vehicles, cleaning windows, etc. If you choose a brand like Pureit, you have the option of choosing an RO water purifier with eco saver technology that reduces a lot of water wastage. This is part of Pureit’s commitment to produce and sell green products.

 UV (Ultraviolet) Purifiers

A UV water purifier is exclusively designed to work against microbial contamination. UV purifiers are known to eliminate 99% of the microbes.

In a Pureit UV water purifier, first, the water passes through the Sediment Filter which removes fine and coarse particulate impurities/dirt. The second stage is the Activated Carbon Filter that removes remaining dirt, chlorine, and organic impurities like harmful pesticides. It also absorbs color and odor-causing organic compounds from water. Then the water passes through Mesh Filter, which ensures that no suspended / dirt particles enter the UV chamber.

Water is passed through a UV chamber fitted with a high-quality UV light source. The UV radiation then targets the DNA of the microbes directly and kills off their ability to reproduce. UV is highly effective against microbes like viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and cysts.

Note that UV module is often used in conjunction with RO module to provide microbe-free, heavy-metal free, and chemical-free water.

However, there’s a slight catch. UV technology works only when the water has low turbidity as the UV radiation should not be scattered. There’s a workaround for this. If you opt for a high-end RO+UV water purifier from a brand like Pureit, they often come with a seven-stage purification process where in the first stage itself, the water is de-sedimented.

Gravity based filters

The gravity-based purifier has two chambers, the upper chamber into which water is filled and the lower chamber into which purified water is collected. They use an activated carbon filter and an ultrafiltration membrane to separate these chambers. An activated carbon filter absorbs impurities that are present in water. The UF filter is a membrane made of hollow fibers, so when the water passes through it, the impurities stick to these fibers.

The gravity-based filters don’t need a steady supply of water and electricity as they work as standalone units. They are easy to install and highly portable, so they are a quick stop-gap solution for those on the move frequently. However, make sure that you keep checking the TDS of your water supply wherever you go just in case you need an RO water purifier.

They are easy to maintain and you can use them with a few basic housekeeping practices. Though they are available in a variety of sizes, we recommend that you go for the largest size as that way, they can last you even when there is no water supply.
