India captain Shubman Gill has dropped a strong hint that Team India is already planning for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, with the management experimenting with different player combinations despite beginning the England ODI series with a convincing six-wicket victory.
India ended their winless run in the United Kingdom by chasing down 259 in 45.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. While the result delighted fans, Gill’s post-match remarks have sparked fresh speculation over whether senior stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could be rotated in the coming months as India builds its World Cup squad.
Gill explains India’s long-term vision
Speaking after the match, Gill said the current ODI series is not just about winning games but also about identifying the ideal balance for the 2027 World Cup.
“We are really trying different combinations to see which kind of combination gives us the best depth in bowling and batting, in both departments,” Gill said.
He explained that India opted to bowl first because the batting unit is currently more experienced than the bowling attack.
“It was more about our combination. We have a youngish bowling attack, so our batting is still a bit more experienced than our bowling. We wanted to bowl first… even if there’s a target of 320, we back the kind of batting order that we have,” he added.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli fail to impress
Despite India’s comfortable victory, it was a forgettable outing for senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
- Rohit Sharma: 11 runs
- Virat Kohli: 5 runs
Their early dismissals shifted responsibility to the middle order, which responded impressively to complete the chase.
Axar Patel shines with all-round performance
The biggest hero for India was Axar Patel, who delivered with both bat and ball.
- Picked up 4 wickets
- Scored an unbeaten 57 runs
- Played a crucial role in India’s successful chase
His all-round display earned praise as India secured an important victory.
England conditions helping India’s World Cup preparations
Gill also pointed out that English conditions provide valuable preparation for the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
“The wicket and the conditions were a bit similar to South Africa. It wasn’t easy for the batters with the new ball, but the wicket settled in nicely. If we can test different combinations on these kinds of wickets, it would be great for us.”
Will BCCI rotate senior players?
Reports suggest the BCCI is considering a rotation policy to evaluate a wider pool of players ahead of the next ODI World Cup. Although Gill did not specifically mention resting Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, his comments indicate that experimentation will remain a priority over the next year.
With India already leading the series, the remaining ODIs could provide opportunities for emerging players as the team continues shaping its roadmap for 2027.
