Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma in Spotlight as Team India Departs for Australia Tour

The Indian cricket team has left for its much-awaited white-ball tour of Australia. Players departed from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday morning.

The series includes three ODIs and five T20Is, starting Sunday in Perth. This tour marks the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international cricket after their Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. Both stars, now focusing on ODIs, will aim to prove their value ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

New Leadership, Familiar Pressure

While the spotlight remains on Kohli and Rohit, new skipper Shubman Gill will also be closely watched. The 24-year-old opener was named India’s full-time white-ball captain earlier this month. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the decision was made with the 2027 World Cup in mind.
Rohit, who accepted the leadership change gracefully, remains a key batter. This tour gives both him and Kohli a chance to silence critics questioning their future. With young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel emerging, the competition for spots is intense.

Balanced Squad with Fresh Energy

The touring squad combines experience and youth. Alongside Kohli and Rohit, the team includes Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana. The latter two earned their spots after impressive domestic and India A performances.

The ODI series begins on October 19 at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Matches will follow on October 23 and 25. The T20I series starts October 29 and concludes on November 8.

Kohli-Rohit Era Enters a New Chapter

Kohli and Rohit last played during India’s unbeaten Champions Trophy run, where Rohit’s 76 in the final against New Zealand earned him the Player of the Match award.
After stepping away from Tests and T20Is earlier this year, the duo are now one-format specialists. Australia presents the perfect chance for them to showcase their hunger and consistency.

As India transitions to a new era under Gill, the presence of Kohli and Rohit ensures the team’s batting strength remains solid.
