Naresh Bhatt murder trial

In a dramatic development in the high-profile case surrounding the disappearance of Mamta Kafle Bhatt, her husband, Naresh Bhatt, told a Virginia court that he did not kill his wife, claiming instead that she died by suicide in July 2024.

Taking the witness stand during his ongoing trial, Naresh Bhatt testified that he found his wife unconscious at their home and believed she had taken poisonous substances. According to his account, he attempted to revive her but did not immediately contact emergency services.

The prosecution alleges that Bhatt murdered his wife and later sought to conceal the crime. During testimony, however, he admitted to hiding and dismembering the body after her death, claiming panic and fear drove his actions rather than guilt over murder.

Court proceedings revealed that Bhatt acknowledged placing his wife’s remains in trash bags and attempting to dispose of them so they would not be discovered. He also admitted purchasing items to assist in concealing the body.

Prosecutors presented forensic evidence from the family home, including findings in a bathroom that reportedly reacted to blood-detection chemicals. Investigators argue the evidence supports their contention that a violent crime occurred.

The case remains especially challenging because the body of Mamta Kafle Bhatt has never been recovered. Prosecutors are relying heavily on circumstantial and forensic evidence to prove first-degree murder, while the defense maintains there is no direct evidence linking Naresh Bhatt to his wife’s death.

As the trial continues, the jury will be tasked with determining whether the evidence supports the prosecution’s murder allegation or the defense’s assertion that the death was a suicide followed by efforts to conceal the body.
