New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced on Thursday that universities may hold their own entrance exams for undergraduate and postgraduate courses if seats are still available after the standard admission rounds.
This measure aims to ensure no program seat remains vacant.
UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar highlighted the importance of each university seat and urged institutions to admit students to fill all seats.
The commission has issued standard operating procedures for using CUET scores in the admission process, which usually involves several rounds of admissions by central universities.
Should seats remain vacant after three rounds of CUET-based admissions, the UGC has recommended that universities broaden the subject criteria to admit more students.
“Universities are allowed to conduct their own entrance exams at the university level to fill these vacancies if seats are still not filled,” he added.
Addressing Vacant Seats
A considerable number of seats in Central Universities and their affiliated colleges remain vacant even after multiple counselling rounds, the UGC reported. This situation leads to resource wastage and denies many students the chance to pursue higher education at these institutions.
Ensuring Quality Education
The UGC stresses that unfilled seats in Central Universities mean missed opportunities for students seeking quality higher education. To tackle this, the UGC has sanctioned a series of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to assist Central Universities in effectively filling these seats.
Primary Admission Criteria
The UGC has reaffirmed that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores will remain the primary admission criterion.
