Trump blames Iran for Indian ship attack

US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of attempting a drone strike on Indian ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the act as “totally unacceptable.”

Trump’s remarks came amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where three oil tankers carrying Indian sailors were caught up in recent US military operations.

On June 8, US forces disabled the Palau-flagged tanker Marivex, which had 24 Indian crew members onboard. All sailors were safely rescued, but the incident has raised alarm in New Delhi and Washington alike. Trump did not specify which vessels were targeted, leaving ambiguity around the scale of the alleged attack.

Iran has yet to respond to the accusations. The timing of Trump’s statement is significant, as speculation grows about a possible US-Iran peace deal. Tehran, however, has denied reports of any such negotiations, insisting that Washington’s actions in the Gulf undermine regional stability.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil supply, has long been a flashpoint for geopolitical tensions. India, heavily reliant on energy imports, views the safety of its sailors and shipping lanes as a strategic priority.

Trump’s sharp words signal Washington’s unwillingness to tolerate perceived aggression against allies and partners. For India, the incident underscores the risks its maritime workforce faces in volatile waters, while also highlighting the broader stakes of US-Iran hostilities.

As the situation unfolds, both governments are expected to monitor developments closely, balancing diplomatic caution with the need to protect national interests.
